SIL-Functional Safety whitepaper and article

There is no question why functional safety plays such an important role: Every year, work accidents cause health problems for about 313 million people. Plant operators invest a lot to avoid personal risks.

In the end, any preventive measure is far more cost-effective than an accident with consequences for people, processes, plants or the environment. In such a case, costs quickly exceed ten to twenty times the actual amount for a plant. On the other hand, investments in functional safety, and thus in measures to avoid accidental and systematic errors, are very moderate if one relies directly on instruments developed according to IEC/EN 61508.
