There is no question why functional safety plays such an important role: Every year, work accidents cause health problems for about 313 million people. Plant operators invest a lot to avoid personal risks.
In the end, any preventive measure is far more cost-effective than an accident with consequences for people, processes, plants or the environment. In such a case, costs quickly exceed ten to twenty times the actual amount for a plant. On the other hand, investments in functional safety, and thus in measures to avoid accidental and systematic errors, are very moderate if one relies directly on instruments developed according to IEC 61508.
